The project
Flat-panel metal entrance canopy
A precision measuring facility is a building where everything is square, and a canopy that is nearly square looks worse than no canopy at all. This is a flat-panel metal entrance canopy — the plainest of the shapes we make and the least forgiving, because there is no curve or rib to hide a line that is off. It sits over the main door on a modern industrial elevation, finished black to pick up the window frames, and it reads as part of the original design rather than something added later. Manufacturing and industrial facilities are a steady part of our commercial work: the buildings are simple, the entrances take real traffic, and the people specifying them care more about how it is built than how it is styled.
