Choosing between them
Retractable awning FAQs
What is the difference between the Legend and the Salute?
The Legend is an open lateral-arm retractable — the arms and roller are visible when it is closed, and it suits decks and patios that want big, flexible shade. The Salute is a full-cassette model: when it retracts, the fabric and hardware fold up inside a protective housing, which keeps the fabric cleaner and gives a sleeker closed look.
Is the cassette worth it?
If the awning will sit closed for long stretches, yes. The cassette shields the fabric and hardware from rain, grit, and UV when it is retracted, which is the main thing that ages an awning that is not in use. The Salute also mounts to a wall, ceiling, or roof, so it fits openings the Legend cannot.
Are they motorized, and can I still operate it if the power is out?
Both are available with Somfy motorization — Altus RTS motors with Telis remotes. Manual override is available so a power cut does not leave the awning stuck out.
What happens in high wind?
A retractable awning should not be left out in a storm. The Somfy Eolis 3D wind sensor handles that for you: it detects movement in the awning itself and retracts it automatically once the wind passes the threshold, without you being home.
Can I control the awning from my phone?
Yes, with the Somfy TaHoma app, which also brings in Alexa and Google voice control. You can open and close it remotely and set schedules.
What do I do with it over the Connecticut winter?
Retractables can stay up, retracted, through winter. If you would rather have it off the building, we offer seasonal take-down and re-hang — we pull it in the autumn, store it, and put it back in spring.
How wide can they go?
The Legend is custom-built to your opening. The Salute runs up to 20 feet wide, with projections to 11 feet 9 inches — the Legend offers projections from 6 feet 11 inches up to 13 feet 5 inches.
